For years I fed my horses the available hay without issues. I judged nutritional quality by appearance and smell. Then my luck ran out and I ended up with a couple who had metabolic issues. They were overweight and mysteriously footsore even with my old tried-and-true management regimen. The missing piece to that puzzle was knowing exactly what was in the hay I was feeding them. Sending hay off or analysis is inexpensive, but without a corer like this one, gathering the sample to do so is a pain. Think pulling random wads from different bales and snipping it up into small pieces with scissors (RIP scissors.)Anyway, this corer let me quickly get samples from multiple bales so I could combine them for the most accurate test result. Using these results I could better tailor the supplements I was feeding to help get a handle on my horses' issues. Not a tool that's used very often, but definitely an important addition to my tack room.

Good product, helps with gathering hay samples for testing without needing to cut bales. Gathering samples used to make a huge mess this helps prevent the mess.

This hay probe works really well. I can core the full bale for testing with minimal issue. I do wish it came with some sort of carrying case and maybe more clear instructions for anyone who has not used one before but its sharp enough to work well on teff and bermuda hay. I have not been able to test it yet with our alfalfa.

This is my first hay probe. I’ve been wanting one for a while so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but it’s well-made out of sturdy material and does the job well what more could I want?
