Since audio is so subjective I'll just quick sum up the stuff I've owned or listened to a lot, and you can take my opinion and do whatever you want with it.I owned an Active Linn Tukan stack which I had for 15 years before I downsized. Very recently I had the Swans D300 active speakers, which I had no interest in upgrading (until they blew up). I still have my first subwoofer, which is an SVS SB12 plus. I've owned quite a few headphones (over ear and IEMs mostly) but have paired it all down to some Meze 109 pros with a Klipsch headphone amp and some Sony XM4s for travel/work. I don't think I have a "sound" that I like.About the 5020s:Design and build. These are beautiful looking speakers and built very well. I just love looking at these every day (with one exception, explained later). Absolutely no flaws with the quality.The sound is very nice. Good voicing, sparkly clear treble and very airy. I would not call these warm and they are definitely not neutral.The bass is a little shy and doesn't hit with much impact. When played at full range, the bass starts to dip off at 150hz and then it steadily rolls off below 100hz. You absolutely need a subwoofer. Since I am using one, the lower roll off is no big deal and I use a high pass filter at 80hz anyways. But I do like a bit more hit between 80-150hz. I tried them closer to the back wall, but I didn't like the sound stage and prefer them about 2' into the room. When they are on the wall, it sounds like a "wall of sound" and when they're farther into the room it sounds more "3D", which I like. It took a lot of time to dial in the sub to help the "punch" in the bass without being boomy to match these speakers, but I eventually found it.The top end is very detailed and airy. But a bit bright for some tracks. Mostly noticeable at higher volumes where it feels like it can create a little too much attention. While I don't find them too sibilant for being as bright as they are. The "S" sound from voices doesn't hurt. But I would rather they were just a bit more neutral. My hearing starts rolling off at 12-14 kHz, so if you have young ears, you might find the highs too much.While I don't put a lot into the accuracy, I've included the measurements from my Wiim pro just to give a pie in the sky idea. The graph is a screenshot while I was trying to dial in the bass at the subwoofer hand off point. There was no eq adjustments on anything over 500 Hz at the time. You can see how bright the speakers are. I didn't like my initial attempts to eq the high end down (it can sound artificial pretty quickly) and ultimately the only eq I have set currently is the high pass from my sub.I noticed that these speakers are very particular to ear level, which I've never really had with the other speakers. My Linns weren't fussy at all, and my Swans ribbon tweeter were bright everywhere. While I can toe the 5020s in and out with almost no change to high end response, as soon as you slouch or sit up straight, the high end changes substantially. Because of this, they sound very good pointed directly at me (or my shoulders), but on their side. The imaging is just as sharp and feels like there's more stage depth in this position. They are also way less impacted by how I sit. Since I always sit dead center when actively listening it just works out better.Unfortunately, they look pretty bad. There is a bunch of stuff on the bottom of the speaker which makes using these on their sides or upside down really ugly.Overall, I'm very pleased. A little more thump, a little less bright and a clean bottom cabinet would make these perfect. More like a 4.5 star but I'll round up.

Fun little speaker. Nice imaging and sound stage width. Gonna need a sub to fill out the lows which is ok.

Super son pour un petit espace occupé

I have had several Q Acoustics over the years, and I so wanted to keep them but ultimately they all had one thing or another that disappointed. Over the last year I've also tried Wharfdale Denton 85, Monitor Audio Silver 100 but also moved these on.So I thought I'd give these 5020s a go, used on Hi Fi Racks solid oak 50cm three legged stands (what a shame this company has ceased trading, superb quality products).Now it may seem I'm using a disproportionately high quality amplifier (Naim 72/HiCap/180) but this combo really sings, beautiful clear crisp treble with minimal harshness, glorious vocals and open mids, wellcontrolled fantastic bass. Played CD after CD and everything sounded gorgeous.So the sound is sorted (and some) but what of the other stuff.The finish is excellent (black vinyl rap) but is boring, and the grilles keep falling off. But So what.The rest of the system is lossless files through Rega DAC-r, WitchHat n2 speaker cables and Chord Shawline interconnects.Summing up, these speakers (at least with high quality amplification) sound awesome.And at £420 a steal.
