If you are familiar with the quick disconnect SAE connectors you will be aware that the connector supplying power should have as its positive terminal the recessed, female, socket and the negative terminal should be the proud, male, plug. This way, short circuits are avoided.The power receiving circuit will have its connector wired in the opposite fashion. Positive will be the plug and negative will be the recessed socket.The problem arises when one wishes to use the plugs to convey power in both directions. An example might be a connector wired to a all terrain vehicle's battery. The wire to the battery positive is live so should terminate in the protected socket. This is proper if the battery is delivering power to an accessory. However, at other times the connector can be used to charge the ATV's battery. In this case, considering the battery charger's SAE connector, positive will be female and negative will be male. The two recessed positive sockets are not going to mate, the two proud plugs will clash.One of these polarity adapters will successfully and neatly resolve the problem.
