This is the PicKit2, a very good programmer that was very successful at the time. But it was superseded by PicKit3 and then PicKit4, and unfortunately Microchip software does not support the old programmers anymore. It is not a hardware issue: this programmer is perfectly capable of programming the latest chips, but Microchip made its software incompatible with the old programmers.I had to program some PIC18F47Q10 chips from 2018, which were no longer supported by the old official software available for the PicKit2. So I had to either dump my new PicKit2 and buy a PicKit4 to use the latest Microchip software, or buy an alternative software called PicKit Plus (or PicKit+), which allows the PicKit2 and 3 to support the latest devices. And that's what I did in the end.The software costs 28 EUR, which is still a lot cheaper than the PicKit4, and it comes with free lifetime updates, so my PicKit2 will continue to be able to program the latest 8 and 16 bit chips in the future. All in all, it wasn't a bad deal, despite the unforeseen extra cost for the software, but I would have appreciated a little more transparency. I had no idea when I bought this programmer in 2021, that it was obsolete since 2009...According to Wikipedia. Conclusion:This programmer, even with the obsolete software, covers most of the classic PICs, but not the latest ones.I like the quality of the kit and the ability to program chips in-situ or using a ZIF socket.PicKit plus will extend its lifetime to the new 8 and 16 bit processors, but it adds to the cost. For maximum compatibility and 32 bits, there is PicKit4, but it is more expensive.

Hat von Anfang an sofort funktioniert. Ein Problem war die Software. Aber auch die war nach längerem Suchenauffindbar. Ebenso die Handhabung und Beschreibung.

Although this is no longer supported some extra ICs are able to be added using 3rd party software add ons.
