I’m building a new fire pit and wanted to use flagstone but it was way to expensive until I found these molds! They work perfect and are exactly what I was looking for. I tried 2 different types of concrete, a sand mix about $6 for a 60lbs bag and the standard gravel mix about $3.50 for a 60lbs bag. I thought maybe the gravel mix would end up with the gravel showing on the top side after shaking out all the air bubbles because the gravel is heavy and would settle to the bottom of the mold. That didn’t happen so I’m going with the gravel mix since it’s about half the cost. I purchased 2 sets of the molds so that I can make more at one time. I pulled the stones out after 4 hours and the concrete wasn’t quit cured so I just need to leave them in for probably 8 hours. Even at 8 hours, I can make 2 sets in the morning and 2 early evening. I manually shook the molds for my trial run and it was more work than I expected and I did NOT get all the air bubbles out. I just purchased a vibrating motor for $26 and will see if this helps.I plan on using a concrete stain/paint once they are all done.I’ll update my review once I make a set with the vibrating motor.

The molds were well made and have worked very well. I have made 45 sets to date and need to make about 25 more. I found that using vegetable oil around the edges helps to release the concrete once set up. I had begun by coating the entire inside of the mold but found that it didn't matter how much shaking to remove bubbles, I had the bubbles occurring. I found that the vegetable oil on the bottom of the mold was causing the bubbles. I didn't use a shaker table, just shook each mold by hand seeing the bubbles rise (I didn't fill each mold completely upon the first filling and shaking - then just filled to the top. I did have some trouble with the top 'finished' portion of the stone to sometimes stick and pull off the finish. I had to let the stones cure longer in the molds before popping them out. I couldn't turn them in 12 hours - needed to wait longer. I am putting in a patio that is about 400 sq ft and this was exactly what I was looking for. Found also that using a 60 lb bag of concrete made. enough concrete for all 6 molds with very little left over. The picture should give you an idea - I plan to stain once all are down.

I purchased a set of these and am happy with the molds. I have been making several sets and have used sakrete 5000, Regular, and even Mortar Mix. I built a shaker table using a shaker table motor I also bought on amazon. My problem is no matter what type of mix I use, a little wetter, or a little dryer, a long time on the shaker table or not Im getting micro bubbles on the surface of SOME, but some in the same batch have less. they tent to be around the edges but occasionally all over the mold. Ive even tried with no releasing agent, or with vegetable oil, same thing. HELP!If someone is consistently getting good stones with no bubbles please share your procedure.!

Ok so bad stuff first because we know that's why you're reading reviews: First, it would have been nice to have a little thought given to mold volume. That is, one standard-size sack of concrete makes about half a mold shy of a full set. Since you can't just unmold them immediately, you'll either want to buy two sets or get really good at using up a quart-ish of random concrete at a time. Second, the molds aren't marked for layout, so I recommend doing what I did and marking them yourself with a chalk pen. Third, the walls are vertical rather than angled, so the molds aren't as easy to release as they might be, which caused some edge cracking in the rigid molds. The edge cracks didn't extend down the sides, and I think if they do it will be relatively easy to patch with some duct tape or fiberglass tape, but since that was only the second set I'd made it made me nervous. The good news: These things look GREAT. The texture is good, the interlocking is seamless, and there are enough similar angles that I was able to make a very organic edge to the walkway I was laying simply by substituting in the "wrong" stone. While I'd've preferred that the shape of the walls make releasing the molds a little easier, they *do* unmold pretty nicely with some mold release.Tips I discovered along the way: Mix your concrete a bit thin, and shake in a bottom layer that's like a double handful of concrete before you finish filling the mold, to do the most to prevent surface bubbles. Do lay out the $ for concrete tint.
