I purchased these on the basis they were marine grade stainless steel 316 - the description on the website.I was disappointed on receipts that there is no label or packaging to indicate what they are made with, So they may or may not perform as expected. Only by fitting and seeing if no rust occurs around the cleat.

This cleat has a gorgeous smooth and shiny finish to the 316 stainless steel. While I certainly wouldn't class it as "Heavy Duty" it does look suitably strongly constructed for its size. Strength in a cleat is a combination of its integral construction and mounting bolts as well as the strength of the deck and crucially, the size of the backing plate. This cleat does not come with mounting bolts and the backing plate will be at the discretion of the installer.It is suggested in the vendor's advertising that this is a replacement for a broken cleat but I must have missed any mention of the distance between bolt centres, or indeed size and thread of the bolts to be used. Nor is there any recommendation for the maximum diameter line that can be secured on it. I was also puzzled to read "And it's easy to install, no drilling or welding required." I doubt I would weld a stainless cleat to a steel deck but if the bolt centres are different how then to secure it to a different sort of deck.I can see two problems with this cleat. The first is the base is just not big enough. The longer the base the stronger everything will be and also, the less chance of the line rubbing against paint or gel coat. Also, I am puzzling how best to keep the caulk from oozing out of the bolt hole when installing it.
