Compromises have to be made when adapting any novel for film, but Accidental Tourist is faithful in spirit to Anne Tyler's novel. Hero is not the right description for Macon, who is accidental in the wider sense. as a man whose life has been ruled by accidents -he married the first woman who said yes , and he writes guide-books for business travellers because a publisher suggested he should do so.He might have continued in this way except for another accident, the death of his son in a hold up that leaves a lasting wound. When his wife asks for a divorce he has to find a kennel to take his dog while he is off on another research trip. Here he encounters Muriel, a woman who, unlike him, knows exactly what she wants, and that is Macon. Through her persistence he reluctantly agrees to let her train his dog and gradually a relationship develops. We also meet his family, two brothers and a sister, who make Macon seem normal by comparison, as they still live in the house where they grew up, and play an odd medically based card game in the evenings. In counterpoint to Macon's gradual estrangement from his family, his publisher, who lives a bachelor life in a condominium, develops a relationship with his sister and eventually takes Macon's place in his family. The main story though is the emotional tug of war between Muriel and his wife, who seeing him happy with another woman, decides she still wants him. This is resolved in Paris, where he finally makes a decision about his future. As with the best films, it's difficult to isolate the contribution of any of the participants, since their contributions blend seamlessly into the whole. Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed the sensitive adaptation, William Hurt is a suitably reticent Macon, and Geena Davis strikes exactly the right note in her first major role as Muriel. The supporting players are all excellent, and the Baltimore settings are exactly right. One reviewer described the film as slow - I prefer to say that it allows us time to get to know the characters and there are some subtleties which are only apparent on repeated viewings. If you are looking for a flash, bang wallop film, then this is not for you -if you appreciate a subtle portrayal of unusual characters, then this may be to your taste.

Macon Leary is one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen in a movie or in a book. The book was transferred to the screen extremely well. I don't really care for William Hurt but he fits this part perfectly. His is a one note character - any deviation would be too painful for him. The pain of losing his son is so intense that he doesn't seem to even let himself feel it. What Hurt does with just a few small changes in his expression is amazing. I guess I've never noticed this before but I guess it is evidence of extreme acting talent that he can do so much with just his facial expressions and how subtle those are. I found this movie extremely moving. The supporting cast is excellent and their stories are as interesting as that of Macon. His blundered into relationship with someone completely different from himself is fascinating. The pathetic child of this woman is so beautifully played that you just want to grab him and hug him yourself. It's true that the movie moves slowly but it is a deliberate pace that continues on to what can be called a happy ending. Some might just say "this is one strange dude" and never take him to your heart but I just loved this story. A Side Note: I wish the people who write the information paragraph about movies on Amazon had actually seen the movie. Macon doesn't buy a dog. It was his son's dog. Puleeeeeez. This is not the first bad mistake I've seen in these "blurbs" and I'm sure it won't be the last. Note: This rather old VHS movie has been transferred to DVD very well. I was especially pleased with the Special Features. The deleted scenes were wonderful and added so much to the movie for me as I remembered these things from the book and had missed them in the movie. So, do please look at the deleted scenes. All of them - and there are many. Most of them are excellent. There are several that make Muriel a much more sympathetic person - not just some sort of a kook. These scenes should have been left in the movie.
